In the mid to late 1970s, Hansen helped with the construction of Julian Woods by building several homes in the community. The community, self-sufficient, maintains the gravel roads on their own. Her birds eat a variety of foods such as pasta, berries, vegetables, and occasionally toast. Sandy's house is filled with bird cages, and that makes it difficult to walk though the first floor of her home. Families looking to adopt a bird go through a vigorous adoption process that includes multiple visits to the rescue. Finnegan, a Congo African grey, is missing all of her toes, but that doesn't slow her down.
